Jom Makan is a Malaysian food place in Iloilo City located outside the main gate of Central Philippine University. “Jom Makan” is a translation of “Kaon ‘Ta” or Let’s Eat.
Malaysian cuisine is a rich blend of flavors and cooking styles that are influenced by the country’s diverse cultural heritage. It’s a unique fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous cultures, and the use of fresh ingredients and spices is central to the cuisine.
While it is foreign as it may sound, the taste does not go far from Filipino or Ilonggo. The spices and flavors are familiar.
The other thing that is unique about Jom Makan is its kitchen. It is located outside the store and near the sidewalk. It is open and you can see their kitchen staff do all the chopping, tossing, and food preparation.
Jom Makan Menu
The best thing about their menu is the pricing. It may not be as cheap as the carinderia, but the prices are not also as expensive as a high-end Asian restaurant. Students’ pockets can afford it, at least.
What We Had
We are regulars here. Since I am currently enrolled at CPU, Jom Makan has been a friend, especially during Saturday classes we need to grab some lunch. It is also a great go-to place because our classes end late until 9PM-9:30 PM and Jom Makan is one of the few food places open until past midnight.
This is my personal favorite – Mee Goreng. Before dining at Jom Makan, I have been hoarding Indomie. It is often out of stock in major groceries so guilty so when I get to see some, I hoard some.
Mee Goreng is a spicy fried noodle dish that is typically made with yellow noodles, vegetables, shrimp, and a flavorful sauce. If you are not sure what to have, Mee Goreng is the answer.
How to Get There
As mentioned, Jom Makan is located outside CPU’s main gate. All you need to ride are either of these:
3 UNGKA – ILOILO CITY PROPER VIA CPU
22 UNGKA – LA PAZ VIA CPU – ISATU LOOP
Whether you’re in the mood for something spicy, savory, or sweet, there’s a dish for every taste.
