DIY: Seashell Keychain Summer Souvenir

Summer – is definitely one of the best season that everyone has been waiting for! Beaches, watermelons, travel are becoming a notch more awesome during this time of the year. Since it is really summer, we also have our little ‘company summer outing’ and this year’s theme is Dlinkers Summer with a Twist!

This year, us committee have decided to give a “little something” to our colleagues as a souvenir for our adventure this year. It was held at the Magic Island Resort, Guimaras.

Since this souvenir that we have been pushing is not included on our budget, the biggest challenge really is on how we can make a good souvenir out of a very limited resources so we decided to have a 10-15 pesos budget per head. (ROLF) P10!

So I went downtown and I found a store at the Iloilo Central Market which sells shells (ummm not by the seashore, k korny bye) that would perfectly be the main material for the key chain.

Next I went at Iloilo Shanghai Bazaar – the place that will take your imagination far more than you think at a very reasonable prizes. (ooppss free advertisement for the said bazaar here ahahha). I bought small Styrofoam balls, thin wire, glue sticks, glue gun and the key chain rings. I hurriedly went home and start my “major project”.

So the first thing you need to do just like any thing you wanna make is to prepare all the materials needed.

The actual steps:

1. Cut a thin wire to about a 4 inches (or measure the diameter of the Styrofoam ball. We will make this wire the thing that will connect the Styrofoam ball to the key chain ring.

2. Look for something that will make a hole through your Styrofoam ball so the thin wire can pass through it. In my case, I used a wooden stick of the cotton buds.  😀

4. At one end of the Styrofoam ball, place one little seashell. This seashell will serve as our ‘stopper’ so the Styrofoam ball will not fall off.

5. In the other end, bind the key chain ring and the thin wire together so we’ll have the output same as in the picture.

6. With the help of the glue gun and glue stick I bought, carefully assemble the assorted seashell beads in the Styrofoam ball. Repeat this process until the Styrofoam ball will be filled out by the seashells.

There you have it! My Seashell Key Chain with a budget of P10. I made 35 pieces of it so everyone who’ll join in the summer outing will have one. Sometimes you really don’t have to be a real craft artist to an expert to do little things that will make other people happy. You just have to do a little walk downtown and extract every creative juices you have.
