The historic Makinaugalingon Press has been officially inscribed in the National Register of the Philippines’ Memory of the World program, a prestigious recognition conferred by UNESCO to safeguard significant documentary heritage. The conferment ceremony, held on February 23, 2026 at the Ker Building, brought together city officials, cultural workers, academics, and descendants of the press’ founder in a shared celebration of its enduring legacy.
The event underscored the vital role of the Makinaugalingon Press in shaping regional identity and chronicling the social and political history of Western Visayas. For decades, the press has served as a platform for public discourse, preserving voices, ideas, and narratives that reflect the aspirations of its people.
Leading the conferment were UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines (UNACOM) Secretary-General Ivan Henares and Professor Nick Deocampo, President of the UNESCO National Commission’s Memory of the World Committee. The certificate of inscription was received by Ms. Pilar Martinez on behalf of the Makinaugalingon Printing Press. In his remarks, Deocampo described the press as a “living record” of public thought and debate, emphasizing that the recognition ensures its preservation for future generations.
Beyond its historical value, the recognition highlights the press’s significant contribution to the development of the Hiligaynon language and literature. It reinforces Iloilo City’s cultural identity and links its documentary heritage to its earlier designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
Together, these distinctions celebrate Iloilo not only as a center of culinary excellence but also as a vibrant hub of storytelling, memory, and intellectual tradition, where culture is preserved both in written words and in shared flavors.
