Jane’s Walk 2025: A Journey Through Jaro

1

On May 10, 2025, a Jane’s Walk around Jaro, Iloilo City happened. We scheduled a special time of the year to see our neighborhood in Jaro. It was just a stroll, walking back to our familiar streets and rediscovering stories that we share.

For those who might be interested, next time, this Jane’s Walk is done annually, free, community-led walking tours inspired by the legendary urban activist and writer, Jane Jacobs. In Iloilo City, the main organizer is Doc Vic Salas.

This was already the second year of Jane’s Walk. The first one happened in the District of Molo. Through Jane’s walk, we believed that the best way to understand a place is to walk it, to observe the little details, and to connect with the people who live there.

On February 7, 2023, Loreto Ledesma House was officially declared a Heritage House by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and unveiled its historical marker.

This area was believed to be the spot where the water source of old people of Jaro was located. This is where they fetch their water for drinking, washing the clothes and dishes, and taking a bath.

The Restored Jaro Bandstand

The bandstand played a role in community life as they were a place for local bands to entertain the public after mass and during festivals, to deliver announcements and speeches, and simply a place to gather and enjoy the ambiance of the plaza.

Jaro Plaza was once the most beautiful plaza in Panay, and people from towns would choose to relax and unwind here during their rest days.
