Western Visayas-based media participated in a three-day seminar-workshop to adapt to the new shift in their industry, with more focus on online content, organized by the Philippine Press Institute (PPI), with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, and in collaboration with the University of the Philippines (UPV) Bantala Media Excellence Awards and Iloilo Media-Citizen Council.
Journalists, reporters, bloggers, content creators, lecturers, and students of the Communication and Media Studies program of the UPV Division of Humanities, College of Arts and Sciences, took part in the seminar titled “Seminar-Workshop on Truth or Dare: Western Visayas Journalists’ Response to Media Disruption” held on June 16-18 at the Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City.
Dr. Zoilo Andrada, Jr., a faculty member of the Division of Humanities, CAS, and Francis Allan Angelo, Daily Guardian Editor-in-Chief, set the tone of the seminar on the opening day by discussing the current landscape of the local media industry and online reporting, respectively.
The second day of the seminar featured multiple topics, which included fighting disinformation, digital and cybersecurity habits, and becoming social on social media.
The said topics were discussed by PPI Seminar Director Joyce Babe Pañares, National Union of Journalists of the Philippines Secretary-General Ronalyn Olea, and ABS-CBN Senior Multiplatform Journalist Jacque Manabat.
Chancellor Clement Camposano, in his message during the opening day, talked about digital transformation in the media.
“Digital technology has the capacity to shift the way you think or the way you communicate with people; and if communication and sociality are so central to our identities, you could imagine what technology like this can do,” he said.
Meanwhile, Andrada said “media disruption is nothing new,” citing the example of the shift in communication from radio to television.
Aside from their content creation output, the participants were also tasked to draft the guidelines for online reporting and content creation of Western Visayas-based media outlets. (Mr. Carlson B. Alelis, IPO)
