Iloilo City has added another award under its belt after it was cited as Most Progressive Low Carbon Transport City.
The southern city was also awarded with Best Action Plan to Support the Pilot City REAP (Re-entry Action Planning), Best Social Media Marketing Plan, and Highest Posttest Scores.
The awards were given during the culminating program of the Capacity Building of National Government Agencies and Local Government Units on Low Carbon Transport Project (CaB-LCT), held at UP Diliman, Quezon City on August 31, 2023.
Iloilo City bested other LCT pilot cities, namely Baguio, Pasig and Sta Rosa, Laguna.
“Iloilo City is most honored to receive the latest awards. While we are always humbled and honored by these awards, the whole City Government will strive to be deserving of them and will always strive to be better,” said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas.
CaB-LCT is being implemented and sponsored by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Department of Transportation (DOTr), Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the UP National Center for Transportation Studies (NCTS).
The CaB-LCT Projects adopts the REAP process to ensure that key learning/insights gained by the training participants are significantly applied to their respective organizations.
The REAP Activity is a proactive process that facilitates discussions and agreements between the training participants and training sponsor/provider on the strategies to be implemented following the training program.
Iloilo City team is led by Public Safety and Transportation Management Office (PSMTO) head Jeck Conlu and City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) head Engr. Neil Ravena, together with representatives from City Planning and Development Office, City Engineer’s Office, and the Public Information Office.
Conlu said the low carbon transport project will benefit the connectivity of the city’s transport system especially the interoperability of the modern transport and active mobility in the city.
“It will lower our traffic congestion, and promote clean air and health. It promotes a sustainable and efficient transportation system,” he added.
Promoting environment-friendly transport system is one of commitments of the Treñas administration in line with its development roadmap called W.H.E.E.L.S. (Welfare, Health and Sanitation, Education, Environmental Management, Livelihood, and Sustainability) for Inclusive Development.
One of these is the e-vehicle (EV) bus rapid transit (BRT) by First Balfour, part of the esteemed Lopez Group. EV-BRT is a low-carbon urban transport system which is seen to reduce traffic congestion and benefit the environment while contributing to the development of the local economy. (Iloilo City PIO)
