With a total of 689 first-year students and 2,100 returning students in Miagao, Iloilo City, and Tacloban College combined, UP Visayas formally opened Academic Year 2022-2023 during the Opening Exercises on September 5, 2022, at the Covered Court Miagao campus.
“It is a challenge to master the skills of remote learning. We need to have the skills to navigate new tools and technologies needed for online learning,” said Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Philip Ian P. Padilla, who gave the welcome remarks during the program.
The Opening Exercises included the presentation of the executive officials, the deans, and all the officials of UPV, including all the staff of the academic, research, and support offices.
Jerard Megg D. Cordero, a BS Accountancy 2012 alumnus, magna cum laude, was the guest speaker. He was the Class Valedictorian of 2012. In college, he was a Philippine Institute of Certified Accountants (PICPA) awardee for Most Outstanding Accountancy Student and the Government Association of Certified Public Accountants Inc. (GACPA) awardee for Excellence in Government Accounting. He was also a part of the UPV team that represented the Philippines and won as world champion in the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Global Business Challenge in 2011.
Cordero is a Certified Public Accountant by profession and is presently a senior director at SGV and Company, where he manages simultaneous engagements and supervises both financial accounting advisory services and external audit engagements. He is also a lecturer in the Department of Accounting, College of Management of UPV.
Likewise, a message from an upper-class student was also heard in the person of Joshua P. Bacunador, BS Fisheries IV, with a response from an incoming first-year, Carmel C. Javellana, BSBA (Marketing).
