Iloilo City Government Donates Lot for Bureau of Jail Management and Penology

Iloilo City Government donated a parcel of land to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) for the transfer of BJMP Jail to a much wider space in Buntatala, Leganes.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said a 20,000-square-meter lot was granted to BJMP after signing an agreement and turnover on Nov. 7.

“The BJMP at Iloilo City Police Office and Ungka in Jaro district are already overcrowded. That is why the city purchased two hectares. Immediately after signing the Deed of Sale, it was donated to BJMP,” Treñas said.

He recognized the need for new facilities to avoid congestion and prevent possible health risks due to overcrowding.

He said this must be given utmost attention and importance by the City Government to improve the current situation of the facility for the benefit of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) and their visitors.

Currently, the female dorm in City Proper and the male dorm in Ungka, Jaro is already congested.

Treñas added they will request a budget allocation from the national government for the construction of new facilities in 2023.

A portion of the property will also be allotted to build a regional office.

The initiative is in support of efforts to meet the needs of PDLs while they are under rehabilitation. (Angelo Miranda / Iloilo City PIO)
