DepEd 6 and CWVS Collaborate on a History Conference and Workshop

The Department of Education – Region VI and the UP Visayas Center for West Visayan Studies conducted the Webinar Workshop on Balik Kasaysayan: Historical Trail through Zoom on October 5-7, 2022.

The webinar aims to increase DepEd stakeholders’ knowledge of local and national history. The webinar provided a thorough context for understanding history, highlighted the importance of hands-on, experiential learning and knowledge of local history, and discussed the guardianship of these learnings to be imparted to the young students who should know about the past and its importance to the present and the future.

The opening day of the seminar was attended by the officials of DepEd Region VI, headed by Regional Director Dr. Ramir B. Uytico and UP Visayas Chancellor Dr. Clement Camposano, who gave a message on the significance of teaching and learning history among our students.

Faculty members and researchers from UP Visayas delivered lectures on various topics that emphasize the encompassing value of history in human lives.

The sessions on Oct. 5 were conducted by Prof. Anthea Redison, Director of the Center for West Visayan Studies, who talked about “The Task of Teaching and Learning History: Challenges and Opportunities,” and Rad Xavier Sumagaysay of the CAS Division of Social Sciences who discussed “Teaching History with Primary and Secondary Source Analysis.”

The sessions on Oct. 6 were given by Sashah Dioso of the Center for West Visayan Studies with his topic “Trends and Prospects in Local History Research in Western Visayas” and Rene Trance of the UP High School in Iloilo who delivered a talk on the “Tour of Heritage Houses as a Teaching Strategy in History.”

The Oct. 7 sessions were delivered by Dr. Randy Madrid of the Div. of Professional Education, who lectured on the “New Methods for Basic History Education” and Professor Emeritus Alicia Magos, who shared the topic “Teaching History through Ethnography.”

Dr. Elena Gonzaga gave the challenge of relearning and reteaching history, while the closing message was given by Prof. Anthea Redison. Dr. Mary Hazel Vivien P. Pineda, Education Program Supervisor, headed the conduct of the webinar. (Ms. AL Ramirez, IPO)
