UPV MACH Launches Ginhúptan Collectors Series

In celebration of the University of the Philippines’ 115th Foundation Day Anniversary, the UPV Museum of Art and Cultural Heritage (MACH) launched the Ginhúptan Collectors Series initially featuring the art collection of Chancellor Dionisia A. Rola, which she donated to the University.

Ginhúptan, from the Hiligaynon root word hupút, means to take care of, to preserve, and to maintain. Because collectors are people who care for and preserve art and artifacts for pleasure and for posterity, ginhúptan best describes what they do.

The Ginhúptan Collectors Series is a new initiative of the UPV MACH to share with the public the various private collections of UP alumni and supporters of the museum.

The first show of the exhibition series now on view at Hanas Changing Exhibition Gallery 2 focuses on selected artworks collected by the first chancellor of UP Visayas, Dr. Rola.

Aside from being a respected educator and administrator, Chancellor Rola – who is now 102 years old – was a staunch advocate of the arts.

She supported summer art workshops and facilitated the holding of art exhibitions in various spaces and venues in Iloilo City when she was the Dean of the UP College Iloilo in 1975. Later as Chancellor in 1985, she established the UPV Art Gallery at the back of the old Little Theater.

In 1997 and in 2019, Chancellor Rola turned over to UP Visayas over 80 pieces of paintings, prints, ceramics, and drawings. The Ginhúptan Collectors Series featuring the Rola Collection is curated by Martin Genodepa.

Museum hours are from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday. For inquiries and group visits, message the UPV OICA Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067898149019) or call 3379159. (UPV OICA)
