The BS Fisheries (BSF) program of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, UP Visayas (UPV-CFOS) underwent a five-day rigorous ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) program assessment process.
The BSF was one of the four academic programs assessed by the AUN-QA during its 304th program assessment held at UPV and UP Los Baños last November 21 to 25, 2022.
The BSF is the first-degree program of UP Visayas assessed by the AUN-QA.
The AUN-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) is established to promote quality assurance in higher education institutions, raise the quality of higher education, and foster collaboration among regional and international bodies for the benefit of the ASEAN community.
The weeklong remote assessment kicked off with an opening program last November 21, 2022. The activity was attended by the AUN-QA assessors composed of Prof. Dr. Herman Parung of the Department of Civil Engineering of Universitas Hasanuddin, Indonesia, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pakorn Watanachaturaporn of the Department of Computer Engineering of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand.
The UPV officials who attended the opening program were composed of Chancellor Clement C. Camposano, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Philip Ian P. Padilla, Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension Harold M. Monteclaro, UPV Quality Assurance Officer Steve P. Janagap, CFOS Dean Encarnacion Emilia S. Yap, institute directors, and other key personnel of CFOS.
Ms. Gerthrode Charlotte Tan-Mabilog, Director of the Information and Publications Office, hosted the opening ceremony.
In his welcome remarks, Camposano said “as a constituent unit of the national university, UP Visayas is keen to demonstrate its commitment to help achieve the twin goals of harmonizing educational standards among ASEAN member countries, and bringing about the continuous improvement of academic quality among universities in the region.”
The activity is part of CFOS’s internationalization and standardization efforts to provide high-quality education and to produce globally competitive students in the fields of fisheries and ocean sciences.
Interviews with the CFOS’s Self Assessment Report (SAR) team and administrators, selected academic support personnel, support staff, students, alumni, and employers took place on the succeeding days. Live virtual tours of facilities of UPV and CFOS were also held.
The AUN-QA accreditation team looked into the program’s expected learning outcomes, program specification, program structure and content, teaching and learning approach, student assessment, academic staff quality, support staff quality, student quality and support, facilities and infrastructure, quality enhancement, and output.
The AUN-QA assessors presented the strengths and areas of improvement of the BSF program based on the interviews with selected stakeholders, virtual tour of facilities, and review of documents submitted SAR documents at the virtual closing program last November 25, 2022.
