Iloilo City took a PAW-sitive leap for our furry friends with the official launch of operations of animal welfare desks in all police stations in the metro. The animal welfare desks will cater to concerns and complaints about animal cruelty, neglect, and abuse.
This landmark initiative is a collaboration between the Iloilo City government, the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), and animal welfare advocates from non-government organizations.
A program and ceremonial signing of the Pledge of Commitment was held at Iloilo City Police Station 7, ICARE Barangay Esperanza, on Friday morning, November 22.
City Councilor Miguel S. Treñas, author of the ordinance and a pet owner himself, emphasized the need for a comprehensive legislative framework to effectively regulate companion animal trade, promote responsible pet stewardship, and establish an intelligence network for monitoring zoonotic diseases and other animal welfare concerns.
Present at the event was Dr. Fernando J. Abulencia, City Veterinarian; Police Col. Kim Legada, ICPO Chief; City Councilors Ely Estante, Johnny Young, and Miguel Treñas; Police Chiefs of City Police Stations; Special Asst. to the City Mayor Maria Mathilde Treñas; Donna Magno, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office; and Executive Assistant Gabriel Corro from the Vice Mayor’s Office.
Section 5 of the Iloilo City Animal Welfare Ordinance (Regulation Ordinance 2024-141 as amended by RO 2024-215) mandates the establishment of Animal Welfare Desks in all police precincts under the Iloilo City Police Office, each with a designated Animal Welfare Officer tasked with the enforcement of the city ordinance and the Animal Welfare Act.
Those who are found violating these regulations will incur fines.
